If you are in legal practice and not yet using AI, now is the time to start. AI is ubiquitous and continuously evolving – even as you read this. The question is no longer whether to use it, but how to best integrate it into your practice. In New Zealand, the absence of specific legislation for AI is concerning. Legal professionals must navigate existing laws and develop bespoke policies accordingly.

This On Demand will cover various types of AI and their capabilities, policy issues, strategies for mitigating risks, and best practices for implementation. These topics are crucial for enhancing your practice, serving your clients effectively, and engaging with other stakeholders.

  • Receive an overview of the various types AI and their capabilities to ensure you are using the appropriate tools for specific tasks (eg research, drafting, and summarising).
  • Improve your understanding of what legislation and regulation exists in respect of AI, in terms of ownership, confidentiality, privacy, fair trading, online harm, misinformation and professional responsibility/ethical obligations.

Arran Hunt

Arran's first career was as a technical business analyst, both in New Zealand and London. This work involved creating positive disruption, reengineering business processes to improve productivity and take advantage of modern technology. On gaining admittance, he joined a top franchise boutique law firm, forming a solid base in commercial, contract, and IP law. Over time Arran has been able to grow a practice in technology law, providing assistance to both specialised technical companies, as well as people or companies with a technology based legal issue.

His approach to law is to find a solution that best meets the needs of the client. This can often mean finding a compromise, and he has assisted a number of clients with negotiating agreements without the need to commence formal court action. He has also represented several clients under the Harmful Digital Communications Act 2015, including the first civil action under the Act.

He has since gained a reputation as one of the more technically minded lawyers in New Zealand. He writes and presents frequently on the subject of technology and law. He also acts for a number of technology based companies and industry groups, and is on the board of the charity Dignity Freedom Network New Zealand.

Dr Benjamin Liu

Dr Benjamin Liu is a Senior Lecturer at the Commercial Law Department of the Business School, University of Auckland. His teaching and research focus on financial markets law and the law of artificial intelligence. His papers have appeared in both local and international peer-reviewed journals. Previously, he worked at international law firms and a leading European bank, specialising in financial derivatives and structured products. He is admitted to practise in New Zealand, England and Wales.

Lloyd Gallagher

Lloyd has a passion for all things law and is able to see the different interplays and interactions between laws and how they affect legal/business decisions. He has practised as a consultant and as an arbitrator and mediator since 2011, and works closely with barristers and solicitors to build successful solutions.

Lloyd has a strong IT background and has been an industry leader since 1991 in telecommunications, cyber security, and programming.

He is the convenor of TLANZ’s Technology & Law Committee.
