AI and the Human Edge

Building the Skills of the Future Lawyer

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is changing how legal work is done, but it is also changing what will distinguish a successful lawyer.

As technology takes on more research, drafting and process work, young lawyers will increasingly need to demonstrate capabilities that cannot simply be automated: sound judgement, critical thinking, emotional intelligence, communication, relationship-building, commercial awareness and the ability to create trust.

This practical webinar takes the discussion about AI beyond the technology itself. Three experienced presenters will explore the human and professional skills young lawyers need to build successful careers in an AI-enabled profession.

Winning and keeping clients – Client centricity, business development and client engagement, including how young lawyers can build relationships, communicate value, turn enquiries into clients and confidently promote professional services without compromising professional standards.

Thinking and working well with people – Critical thinking and independent judgement in an AI environment, together with emotional intelligence, stress and resilience, effective communication and the psychological awareness needed when dealing with clients, colleagues and challenging professional situations.

Being seen, heard and remembered – How young lawyers can build professional visibility and credibility through personal and firm branding, digital marketing, video and visual communication, social media and modern communication channels.

The emphasis throughout will be practical: what lawyers need to become better at because AI can do more.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this webinar, attendees will be better able to:

  • Understand why human judgement, communication, trust and relationship skills become more important as AI assumes a greater role in legal work.
  • Adopt a more client-centred approach to legal practice and better understand what clients value from their lawyers.
  • Build professional relationships and develop business in a way that is confident, appropriate and ethical.
  • Maintain critical and independent thinking when working alongside AI-generated information and analysis.
  • Use emotional intelligence and psychological awareness to communicate more effectively with clients and colleagues.
  • Recognise and manage stress, pressure and challenging interactions while developing greater professional resilience.
  • Build a credible professional profile through personal branding, digital communication, social media, video and other modern communication channels.
  • Identify practical ways to differentiate themselves and add value as their legal careers develop in an increasingly AI-enabled profession.

These learning outcomes reflect the themes already developed in the programme, particularly client centricity, ethical business development, critical thinking, emotional intelligence, resilience and branding.
